Spiny Leaf Insects, also known as The Giant Prickly Stick Insect are a type of Phasmid which make incredible pets for first time pet owners. Especially for the bug fanatic children!
Having only a short lifespan, you are able to watch these guys grow up, reproduce and restart the lifecycle. Males grow and develop wings making them able to fly, whereas females do not grow wings. Females can live up to 18 months of age and will mature to a length of approximately 20cm. Males live a shorter life then females, up to 6-8 months of age and will mature to approximately 11cm in length.
Phasmids are a low maintenance pet, although they do require fresh eucalyptus branches with healthy leaves every couple of days to eat. They prefer warm, damp environments so daily sprays from a mister bottles would be beneficial for them and gives them something to drink!
Fun fact, 1 female spiny leaf insect can and will fertilise her own eggs cloning her self, therefore all babies produced by a lone female will hatch to be female! if you have a male and female pair, the male will fertilise the eggs and you will have a mix of male and females!
